How to Master Preppy Style

Consider these the polished sartorial classics you know and love—but better. This season, we’re seeing a significant reemergence of the nostalgic school-girl aesthetic that may have (at one time or another) ruled all of our closets. It’s the staples like Oxford shirts, tailored trench coat outfits, knee-length skirts, Mary Janes and cable-knit cardigans that are backing up the revival of a uniform-inspired wardrobe. Below, expect new ways to layer the sweater-shirt-and-skirt combo, iconic preppy outfits and styles with high-fashion flair and the color everyone’s going to be wearing this spring.

HOW TO LAYER

1. The Sweater + Shirt + Skirt Combo

This classic three-piece look may be one of the most common preppy ensembles, and we’ve been taking notes on the new ways to style it straight from the latest runway collections. One of the reasons people flock to this Ivy League–inspired getup is partially due to its effortless styling potential. All you need are three preppy staples and a confident styling M.O. to breathe new life into this sophisticated outfit.

MUST-TRY COLOR

3. Khaki

Let us introduce you to the mainstay color of collegiate prep perfection: khaki. Yes, it is a neutral, but the versatility and appeal of this light shade of tan is something that cannot be ignored. It’s no secret that khaki has been used for uniforms around the world for centuries, but the color has now finally found its way onto the fashion runways and into our personal wardrobes, too. Take for example FERRAGAMO, Nili Lotan and The Row, which prove in their Spring 2023 Collections that head-to-toe khaki can make a statement all on its own—and we’re here for it. For the maximalist, a monochromatic khaki look ensures head-turning appeal. Similar to the utility trend—which has also made its way onto our Saks It List this season—khaki’s modern redux can be seen through different silhouettes; sleek tailored trousers or slouchy oversized parachute pants, a long trench coat and a cropped cargo jacket. If a monochrome-outfit feels too daring (or even too minimalist) for you, make the most of khaki by pairing it with other earth-tone shades like olive greens, tans or browns, or amp it up with cargo-heavy pockets, zippers and details.
